今天我們探討without一詞的常見但小伙伴們不熟悉的幾種考法。

沒有，不帶(某種感情)：
If you do something without a particular feeling, you do not have that feeling when you do it.
【例句】
Janet Magnusson watched his approach without enthusiasm...
珍妮特·馬格努森冷冷地看著他走過來。
【官方真題1】
The idealized paintings of nature produced in the eighteenth century are evidence that the medieval ------natural settings had been ----- and that the outdoors now now could be enjoyed without trepidation.
(A) fear of.. exorcised
(B) concerns about.. regained
(C) affection for.. surmounted
(D) disinterest in.. alleviated
(E) enthusiasm for.. confronted
思路解析：答案選A。
在該真題中，without trepidation為不帶有恐懼之情的意思。
整一句的含義是：這幅誕生于18世紀(jì)的對(duì)自然理想化的畫畫作品是一個(gè)證據(jù)，那就是在中世紀(jì)對(duì)自然環(huán)境的害怕之情已經(jīng)被驅(qū)趕掉，并且人們在欣賞室外風(fēng)光的時(shí)候也毫無恐懼之情。
該句evidence后有2個(gè)同位語從句，前后互為重復(fù)關(guān)系。而且在時(shí)間方面的對(duì)比方面：中世紀(jì)和現(xiàn)在表明了在過去大家對(duì)nature是恐懼的，現(xiàn)在已經(jīng)不再恐懼，此為恐懼的重復(fù)。其次，natural setting 和outdoors為重復(fù)的第2處，當(dāng)然，該句還有其他的重復(fù)，限于篇幅的問題，今天姑且不討論。
【常考釋義2】
在沒有(發(fā)生或做某事)的情況下：
If one thing happens without another thing, or if you do something without doing something else, the second thing does not happen or occur.
【例句】
如果主句沒有否定的情況下，其實(shí)這個(gè)考法比較容易理解。
但如果在主句中出現(xiàn)了否定，不少?zèng)]經(jīng)過我們培訓(xùn)的同學(xué)問題就來了。
下面我們來看看GRE官方閱讀中的一篇文章節(jié)選部分：
Why then the two years that passed before he translated his private misgivings into public dissent? Perhaps he believed that he could not criticize American foreign policy without endangering the support for civil rights that he had won from the federal government.
該句很多同學(xué)不理解，其實(shí)很簡單的。
我們先看一個(gè)簡單的例句：
It is not possible to reposition the carpet without damaging it.
想要挪動(dòng)地毯又不讓它損壞是不可能的。
也就是without后面的部分是前面可以做一件事的前提。也就是，你只有損壞它，你才可以挪動(dòng)地毯。有了這個(gè)基礎(chǔ)，我們再來看剛才那個(gè)GRE的難句。
Perhaps he believed that he could not criticize American foreign policy withoutendangering the support for civil rights that he had won from the federal government.
意思估計(jì)你也看得懂了，這里我啰嗦一下，其實(shí)就是說，可能馬丁路德金他相信，要想批評(píng)美國政府的外交政策又不危害到他已經(jīng)從聯(lián)邦政府那里獲得的對(duì)民權(quán)的支持是不可能的。
也就是說，如果他一旦批評(píng)了美國的外交政策，那么他已經(jīng)得到的政府對(duì)他民權(quán)方面的支持也肯定會(huì)受到影響。

【官方真題3】
According to one political theorist, a regime that has as its goal absolute_____, without any_____law or principle, has declared war on justice.
(A) respectability.. codification of
(B) supremacy ..suppression of
(C) autonomy .. accountability to
(D) fairness .. deviation from
(E) responsibility ..prioritization of
思路解析：該題大家可以試試，我個(gè)人認(rèn)為選B。
理由是，首先，該句的主干部分是a regime has declared war on justice.同時(shí)該題從句部分出現(xiàn)了倒裝，上過我的課的同學(xué)都應(yīng)該看得出來，has...as...也就是我們經(jīng)常說的has A as B。
由于A部分：【absolute_____, without any_____law or principle】出現(xiàn)了復(fù)雜的修飾，所以放在B后。也就是出現(xiàn)了has as B A ,也就是說，第一空格和第二空格應(yīng)該是同義重復(fù)。因?yàn)閣ithout...其實(shí)是解釋第一空格。
把選項(xiàng)B填進(jìn)去，我們發(fā)現(xiàn)，從句部分的A部分【absolute_____, without any_____law or principle的意思是：絕對(duì)的至高無上的權(quán)力=不受任何法律和原則的抑制。
什么是supremacy呢？
也就是凌駕于所有的法律和原則之上，也就是不受任何的法律和原則的suppression。
對(duì)吧？完整的這句話的意思其實(shí)我個(gè)人非常喜歡，大意是：
According to one political theorist, a regime that has as its goal absolute supremacy, without any suppression of law or principle, has declared war on justice.
根據(jù)一個(gè)政治理論家，一個(gè)把絕對(duì)至高無上的權(quán)力，也就是不受任何的法律和原則的約束，當(dāng)做它的目標(biāo)的政權(quán)(regime)，就已經(jīng)是對(duì)公正的宣戰(zhàn)。
